Program Costs

Union College is committed to providing all eligible, qualified students the opportunity to study abroad as part of their education. To ensure that every student has equal access to academic opportunities, students approved to study away are still considered full-time Union College students and will be charged the College's comprehensive fee. This fee may differ from fees of the study away program providers.

The College will pay the study away program providers directly for the student’s study away tuition, room and board. This allows students to:

  • Retain course registration priority, as established for their class year

  • Be guaranteed housing on campus upon return from study abroad.  Retain housing lottery priority status as established by class year for housing selection (spring term abroad only).

  • Students will continue to receive Financial Aid while studying with the exception of their work-study.

  • Have access to their academic adviser, class dean, Dean of Studies, Dean of Students, and the services offered by International Programs, Becker Career Services, and Wicker Wellness Center.

  • Students have full access to all of Schaffer Library's online information resources, including, eBooks, databases, and ejournals. Students may also email the reference librarians for assistance.

  • Receive credit and grades for study abroad coursework, which will be posted to student’s official transcript by the Office of the Registrar.

Students are also responsible for all costs not expressly included in the fee, such as airfare, visa fees, medical fees, personal expenses and travel.

If the student’s program does not offer a meal plan or only offers a partial plan, students will receive a credit on their Union account. This amount will be in accordance with estimates provided by the student’s study away program.

For a general overview of study abroad costs, you can read the Program Costs sheet. For more details, view the type of program below.

Program Billing

Study abroad programs will be billed to each student account. Students will be able to view the bills online through Self Service. The student account will be billed per the Finance Office schedule. Generally, summer program bills are available in May and due in June; and fall program bills are available in July and due in August; winter break bills are available in October and due in November; winter program bills are available in November and due in December; and spring program bills are available in February and due in March.

On certain programs there are some expenses, for example, meals and transportation, that we ask you and/or your families/supporters to fund while you are overseas. If this is the case, International Programs will notify you of the appropriate amounts and on your bill, you will be given a credit for these expenditures. If you do receive a credit on your bill, this means that while you are abroad, you will need to have access to money equal to the amount of the credit. This is money you will spend to cover program-related expenses, and is separate from the cost of airfare, visa fees (if applicable) and personal spending money, which is also the responsibility of the student.

Example

Mini-Term Program Fee + Insurance  $ 3,830.00 Covers tuition, room, board and health insurance
Living Allowance Credit  $ (350.00) Amount student needs to have abroad to cover program-related expenses
Amount Due to Union  $ 3,480.00 Amount payable to Union to cover remaining program-related expenses
